History of the Magic Bus

What is the Magic Bus?

In the year of our Lord 1993, patriots of Pepperdine, outmatched and inexperienced, charged the fields of Alumni Park. They played like warrior poets. They fought with strength and honor, as heroes, and thus began a legacy . . . forever!!!

In the fall of 1993, Pepperdine Intramural Football was introduced to the team of the future, the Magic Bus. The founders of this elite squad were Darin Campbell, Jason Morris, Tom (Jim) Jeramiason, Rob Clark, Steve "Griz" Wolma, Matt Dahlin, Fred Tran, Skip, Frank (ever been hit by a racketball?) Merrit, Gavin VanHorn, Brent Campbell, Vincent (Del Negro) Thomas, and Dave Greathouse. Although inexperience was a factor during the season, this team managed to make it to the playoffs only to get beat by the Championship Law School Team.

The name, Magic Bus, was dubbed by the core founders of the team: Darin, Jason, Tom, Steve, Rob, and Fred, who had just returned from a year in Heidelberg, Germany. At the time, Fred Tran was living in Rho Parking lot in a VW van, nicknamed the Magic Bus. Thus, in the tradition of the famous Who song and Fred's van, the name came to be. Even though Fred and his van have gone on from Pepperdine, on rare occasion you can still see the van pull up to Alumni Park and the players charging out as the Who's "Magic Bus" silences the crowd.

The tradition of the Magic Bus is still carried on today by a squadron of new players, thirsty for a championship! The only veterans of the first team that still remain: Vince, Gavin, and Brent, will make sure that the Magic Bus doesn't let history repeat itself. After a year of training in Heidelberg, Germany, and drafting top-notch players, this team will stop at nothing until they win. After a stunning upset in Pepperdine's football championship to the same Law School team that defeated the Magic Bus in their rookie season, and an upset in over-time at the California State Championship, the Magic Bus will no longer settle for second best! With the addition of two new all-stars: Chad Morris and Brian Butcher, plus the returning players of the 1995 season, the Magic Bus is expected to go far once again. This team plays with intensity and determination, with one thing in mind . . . a championship!!!

A Brief Note About the Players

A strong heritage that has lasted with the Magic Bus through four seasons is their strong Christian example. Each player has an individual relationship with God and a fervent belief that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. All the glory goes to God, because it is Him who provides us with the talent to play football! Through our example on and off the field, we strive to bring honor to God. If it be his will, we hope to bring honor to him through an undefeated season.
